What a delightful book。 The photographs are beautiful。 There are not only photos of the various dishes, but lifestyle photographs of the author and her family and their mealtimes。The recipes are all relatively easy and I found myself commenting at regular intervals, "Oooh, I want to make this。" Some of the ingredients may be a bit harder to come by not being in the USA but I'm sure Google will offer up suitable alternatives for this South African。Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for all What a delightful book。 The photographs are beautiful。 There are not only photos of the various dishes, but lifestyle photographs of the author and her family and their mealtimes。The recipes are all relatively easy and I found myself commenting at regular intervals, "Oooh, I want to make this。" Some of the ingredients may be a bit harder to come by not being in the USA but I'm sure Google will offer up suitable alternatives for this South African。Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me the chance to read this book。 。。。more

This cookbook is all about making everyday food special。 I loved the quote, "No one is coming to my table that is more important than me。" Also, just because it's a Monday doesn't mean that you can't cook a nice dinner。 I love that concept so much and it really drew me to this book。 It's all in the prep。 There are plenty of shortcuts in the box like using a boxed dessert to get you started。 It encourages you to use what you have making easy substitutions。 The book is broken down a bit differentl This cookbook is all about making everyday food special。 I loved the quote, "No one is coming to my table that is more important than me。" Also, just because it's a Monday doesn't mean that you can't cook a nice dinner。 I love that concept so much and it really drew me to this book。 It's all in the prep。 There are plenty of shortcuts in the box like using a boxed dessert to get you started。 It encourages you to use what you have making easy substitutions。 The book is broken down a bit differently than other cookbooks。 The sections are Weekdays, Party Days, Delta Days, Summer Days, Beach Days, Game Days, School Days, DIet Days and Cheat Days。 The book doesn't have many food pictures and I would have loved more。 Overall, I thought it was a helpful cookbook, just not great。 I received and voluntarily read an e-ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 All thoughts and opinions are my own。 。。。more

Y’all these are the recipes I grew up on! This is a great, easy, Southern cookbook。 Each section has a variety of different recipes (including drinks and desserts in some sections)。 If y’all have never tried tomato pie, when tomatoes are at their peak, you are missing out。 This cookbook has a great recipe for one you should try。 Also I have been looking everywhere for a chocolate cobbler recipe and it’s in this book! I will be trying it this weekend!! I cannot recommend this book enough!

I love to read cookbooks like novels。 On more than one occasion, I have curled up with a cup of coffee, a new cookbook and a stack of post-its to tag the interesting recipes。 So I'm always interested in one that has a good story along with it。 I was intrigued to see the author had included so many personal anecdotes。。。 but I never connected with her。 I actually started skimming through her comments。 The "Fat Lady Soup" for when you over-indulge maybe should have stayed an in-joke between friends I love to read cookbooks like novels。 On more than one occasion, I have curled up with a cup of coffee, a new cookbook and a stack of post-its to tag the interesting recipes。 So I'm always interested in one that has a good story along with it。 I was intrigued to see the author had included so many personal anecdotes。。。 but I never connected with her。 I actually started skimming through her comments。 The "Fat Lady Soup" for when you over-indulge maybe should have stayed an in-joke between friends, and the endless reminders of her money and privileged upbringing were just a bit cringe after a while。 I was not familiar with Elizabeth Heiskell before reading this book, and despite her stories and reminiscences, we just didn't click。 That said, there were some interesting recipes I might try。 They were fairly straight-forward and easy enough for the beginner-to-average home cook - nothing too complex here。 Some were completely from scratch, and some included packaged ingredients, allowing for a quicker cooking process。 There were plenty of attractive photos, which I always appreciate in a cookbook。 Thank you to NetGalley and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for providing me with an ARC in return for my honest opinion。 。。。more

Come on Over is a cookbook by Elizabeth Heiskell。 She is a mom of three girls and a caterer from the Mississippi Delta region。 Elizabeth is also a regular contributor on the Today Show。 If you are from the South, the recipes in this book will both remind you of home and inspire you to try something new。 This cookbook will be released on May 4, 2021。 It is available for pre-order on Amazon。I was born and bred in the Deep South – mostly Georgia and Louisiana。 I have now lived near Charleston, SC f Come on Over is a cookbook by Elizabeth Heiskell。 She is a mom of three girls and a caterer from the Mississippi Delta region。 Elizabeth is also a regular contributor on the Today Show。 If you are from the South, the recipes in this book will both remind you of home and inspire you to try something new。 This cookbook will be released on May 4, 2021。 It is available for pre-order on Amazon。I was born and bred in the Deep South – mostly Georgia and Louisiana。 I have now lived near Charleston, SC for many of my adult years。 As such, I loved the author’s stories about her family and the recipes in this cookbook。 The author’s sense of humor shines in several of her stories。 I especially enjoyed reading about her mother’s decision to make Alfredo with Sausage twice a week versus her otherwise stricter and more health-conscious menu choices。 That is the epitome of a Southern mom。 Some dishes are just worth the extra calories, and we are not afraid to spend them!I love that she uses ingredients that anyone can find。 I already have all of the ingredients in my pantry for many of her recipes。 Some of the recipes only require a few ingredients to make, like Sautéed Cabbage (four ingredients)。 Her notes on the recipes are invaluable。 She makes sure that you know how to succeed when making the dish。 We regularly serve Sautéed Cabbage in my family, and I found her note on this dish spot on。 It is the little secrets that make for a successful dish – especially if you have never made it before。I found it refreshing to see a cookbook organized by events rather than the traditional cookbook categories。 Some of the chapters are Game Days, Delta Days, and Diet Days。 It is fun to see what recipes she likes to combine。 The Diet Days section is full of good recipes。 She even points out which diet she was on when she discovered the recipe。 Raise your hand if you too have tried every diet out there。 Yep, me too! I tried two recipes from this book: Chicken Divine and Jalapeno Pimento Cheese。 Chicken Divine is very much like a traditional Southern casserole。 It tasted like it came straight off of one of my Nana’s recipe cards – with one big improvement – fresh broccoli (instead of frozen)。 I followed Elizabeth’s instructions for cooking the broccoli to the letter。 It was delicious! I will definitely be making this again! The Jalapeno Pimento Cheese fascinated me。 It is made with white cheddar instead of yellow。 I made it without jalapeno’s so everyone in my family could try it。 I cut up fresh jalapenos and added them to my serving。 Yum! This is a great make-ahead recipe that you can make up to 10 days ahead! Everyone needs a recipe like this in their repertoire。After reading Elizabeth’s cookbook, I could not resist looking her up on YouTube to see if I could catch one of her Today Show segments。 I struck gold! Here is a video of her making one of the recipes in the book – PB&J Wings! She is everything that I expected and more。 Elizabeth Heiskell is an energetic burst of southern charm with an endearing southern accent。 Now, I am off to check out her other cookbooks!Note to the Author: Please consider publishing your book as an audiobook。 I would love to hear the stories in your book narrated by you – and your amazing southern accent! 。。。more

This is a great cookbook for people that love Southern foods or want to learn more about it。 Ms Heiskell shares some of her favorite recipes for those special days especially in the south such as Game Day! These recipes are easy to follow and sure to be family pleasers。 Even the fussiest eaters will enjoy her chicken recipes。 For those health conscious folks she shows you how you can make your own bone broth。 So pull up a chair and sit down and enjoy a delicious new meal。

However, let me just say these are not the southern recipes I was looking for。 There may be a slight resemblance if I turn my head, look out of the corner of my eye and squint really hard, but even then, the resemblance is so little that it may as well be a 5th cousin showing up at the family reunion for the first time in 20 years。A lot of the recipes aren't actually usable unless you have a large grocery budget or you're willing to spend beyond your means。 Considering the area I grew up in meant that we relied heavily on fresh fruits and vegetable that came from the garden, we rarely saw recipes like this, even at the holidays。 Even now I wouldn't be able to afford to eat like this more than once or twice a year。Overall, maybe it's just that I didn't connect with the author, but it almost felt like a sorority girl who comes from money telling me that everyone can eat like this all the time。 Here's a hint- they can't! I guess this book might work for someone (with money to spend!) who wants a cookbook with an upper class southern feel to their food, but these recipes just don't work for me。 。。。more
